The project consists of the design, construction, financing, operation, and maintenance of 12 km of the existing A90 Balmedie to Tipperty route (upgraded) and a 47 km long dual carriageway from Balmedie round to Stonehaven and Charleston (new build) in the Scottish Aberdeen region. Construction began in 2015. The first section opened on 22 September 2016 and the final section was opened to the public in 2019.

The Project unofficially also known as the Aberdeen bypass, is structured as non-profit distributing (“NPD”) project, the Scottish variant to the UK PFI procurement model. This major infrastructure development on the outskirts of Aberdeen replaced a dual carriageway through the city which was unsuitable for heavy goods vehicles as they could not cross the Bridge of Dee. The road was designed to have a positive impact on traffic along routes which were heavily congested and prevented the need for HGV to enter the city. The project was also intended to reduce the volume of traffic heading towards Aberdeen Airport.
