North West Fire & Rescue

The North West Fire and Rescue project is an availability-based PPP involving design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance of 16 community fire stations across North West England – seven in Merseyside, five in Cumbria, and four in Lancashire.

The stations were built on both new and existing sites, serving a diverse range of locations from rural communities to inner-city areas. Each facility includes modern operational infrastructure as well as community-focused spaces such as meeting rooms, lecture halls, and gyms.

The stations became operational in 2013, and the concession runs until 2038.

Sustainability

The North West Fire & Rescue PFI portfolio integrates sustainability through energy-efficient building designs, modern insulation, and reduced carbon footprints. Several sites include shared facilities with other services to maximise resource use, while community rooms support local engagement.

The project’s design brief prioritised environmental performance, aligning with long-term public sector carbon reduction goals and promoting more sustainable emergency service infrastructure.
